Winkhaus Gearbox Overview
Winkhaus gearboxes are designed for versatility and compactness, making them the smallest on the market. With a standard height of 185 mm and a backset of +15 mm, they are engineered for efficient space utilization. The precise measurements of 64mm between the latch and deadbolt, along with 63mm from the spindle to the top, ensure compatibility with various door types.
Lock Features and Identification
Winkhaus Cobra locks come equipped with both a latch and deadbolt within the gearbox. They offer three operational types: lift lever, split spindle, and key wind. You can easily identify the type by the color-coded sticker on the side of the gearbox:
- Blue: Lift lever
- Green: Split spindle
- Red: Key wind
We primarily stock the green split spindle locks due to their versatility, allowing them to function as lever-operated locks when a solid spindle is inserted.
Installation and Replacement
Winkhaus gearboxes are uniquely attached to the faceplate using rivets, which can be removed for easy swaps. For detailed instructions on replacing a Winkhaus gearbox, please refer to our comprehensive guide and video.
Be aware that older models may have screws and a passivated yellow finish. These locks are no longer available, but the operation can still be identified by the sticker colors.

Operation and Locking Mechanism
To operate the Winkhaus locks:
Locking the Door:
- Close the door to automatically engage the latch.
- Lift the handle to activate additional locking points.
- Throw the deadbolt and secure the system by turning the key (some brands may throw the deadbolt by lifting the handle).
Unlocking the Door:
- Turn the key to unlock the system.
- Push the handle down to disengage the locking points.
- A quarter turn of the key will retract the latch.
