Surprise gearboxes are designed for versatility and ease of use, available in two backset options: 35mm or 45mm. Each unit features a single spindle mechanism, ensuring a reliable lift lever function.
The dimensions of the Surprise gearboxes are as follows:
- Height: 228mm
- Backset: 35mm or 45mm + 15mm
- Latch Height: 30mm
- Deadbolt Height: 30mm
- Distance Between Latch and Deadbolt: 65mm
These gearboxes are compatible with faceplates that have three screw holes. The measurements for the screw holes are:
- Top to Middle Screw Hole: 109mm
- Middle to Bottom Screw Hole: 109mm
Note that earlier versions included a small spindle hole at the top of the case, near the latch, which was used to hold the latch back.
Operation: Lift Lever
To operate the door:

To Lock:
- Lift the handle upwards to engage the locking points.
- Secure the locking points and main deadbolt (if applicable) by turning the key.

To Unlock:
- Turn the key to unlock the system.
- Push the handle downwards to disengage the locking points and retract the latch.
Latch Reversal: To reverse the latch, simply undo the screw in the latch, remove it, reverse its position, and reinsert it before replacing the screw.
