Product Overview: Avocet Gearboxes

Avocet gearboxes are designed with unique features that enhance both functionality and ease of installation. Measuring 218mm in height with an additional 15mm for the backset, these gearboxes are distinguished by a large cut-out in the top corner that extends below the latch. This design facilitates the fitment of handles where the screws are positioned above the lever.

Specifications:

  • Latch Height: 29mm
  • Deadbolt Height: 34mm
  • Distance Between Deadbolt and Latch: 82mm

Installation Notes:

Unlike traditional gearboxes, Avocet gearboxes are secured to the strip using arms connected by circlips, rather than screws or rivets. While it is technically possible to remove a gearbox from a complete Avocet lock, we recommend replacing the entire unit for optimal performance. Be aware that the design of the connecting arms has evolved; older models feature a flat clip, while newer versions have a curved arm positioned lower down, making it impossible to swap old gearboxes with new ones. This replacement will only fit the latest version of the case.

When measuring the backset, remember to account for a 2-3mm allowance for the faceplate. For instance, a gearbox with a 35mm backset will measure 32mm when not attached to the strip.

To Unlock the Door:

  1. Turn the key to unlock the system.
  2. Push the handle down to disengage the locking points.
  3. A further quarter turn of the key will retract the latch.

With these features and instructions, Avocet gearboxes provide a reliable and secure locking solution for your doors.

Measuring the Backset

To measure the backset, you need to determine the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the keyhole or latch. Use a ruler or measuring tape for accuracy. Ensure you account for any faceplate thickness when taking your measurement.

Measuring the Centres (PZ)

To measure the centres (PZ), measure the distance from the center of the keyhole to the center of the handle spindle. This measurement is crucial for ensuring compatibility with your door hardware.

Understanding the Operation

The operation of the Avocet gearbox can be either a lift lever or a double spindle nightlatch. The lift lever mechanism allows you to lift the handle to engage the locking points, while the double spindle nightlatch provides an alternative locking method that can be operated from both sides of the door.

With these specifications and measurement guidelines, you can ensure a proper fit and functionality for your Avocet gearboxes.
